🟢[3.5/5]︱Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins "Review"

Super Mario Land 2 is such a fun game all around. I started playing it when we had some issues with our Washing Machine and Dryer and we had to go to a Laundromat to get our clothes done, and the way that it presents itself to be is just incredible. I don't even feel like making a cohesive review out of this one considering there isn't much to say about this hidden gem of a Mario game, but just to talk about it generally speaking.

Super Mario Land 2 has Wario, the new antagonist of the series coming to take over Mario's castle claiming it as his own locking it behind six golden coins that Mario must find throughout Mario Land after Tatanga's defeat in Sarasaland. He even appears as a boss in this game! Throughout the game you'll go through the Tree, Turtle, Macro, Pumpkin, Mario, ad Space Zones to claim the coins from the bosses that hold them, and after going through "Wario 's Castle," Mario and him Duke it out, with Wario losing against Mario and he cries of and escapes in fear, with Mario reclaiming his castle.

The story is extremely typical but standard for a Mario game, and the same can be said for the gameplay. It adapts to what's been done with Super Mario World, with Mario having some of the same basic abilities as he had in that game, except for some reason the spin jump is locked behind having a Mushroom instead of it being for small and big. The power-ups in this game are also small but cool: There's the normal Fire Flower which has Mario with a leaf on his head (cause the game was on a Game Boy, a system that displayed Green/White only), and the Carrot which gives Mario the ability to glide. However, should you spam the Jump button, he's able to float on the same plane without having to slowly descend which is a bit too broken, but small quirks like that makes this game more amazing to control. Reminds me of the Cape Feather in World where if you know how to master using it, you're able to completely break the game to your liking.

The graphics for this game are primitive because of the system it's own, but they've done a good effort into keeping a feeling going for it. This game is so wacky, with all of the Zones being stuff you'd expect in a Mario game, and the enemies are the most unique in the whole series! So many enemies that they could be bringing back in future games to spice things up, but honestly their exclusivity is fine in this entry. I don't know if the Super Mario Land games are mainline or anything (tbh I don't know which is mainline Mario and whatnot nowadays), but this game just oozes with charm.

The Music too.... its just awesome all around! All of the songs are notable for me, and the motifs they use throughout the game remind me on how World uses its main motifs throughout its soundtrack. I know that it makes most of the songs feel the same, but the main theme of the game is just incredible.

Really the only thing I could criticize about this game is the fact that it's limited to the Game Boy; the system isn't as powerful as the NES in terms of delivering experiences that are colorful, and I have a feeling that should this game had released on the Game Boy Color, it could've had a better rating. I do remember hearing that someone made a DX patch for this game but I have yet to play it to see if my thoughts would be the same as this one.

But yeah! That's all I have to say about Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Yeah this review is a bit of a mess but i just want to state my honest thoughts about this game without having to put it in a more professional manner. I'm also kind of burned out in terms of making reviews, and I want to get myself into playing them again.
